The First Short Films in Competition!

A first portion of the Official Selection is revealed today. There are 80 short films in competition at the Annecy Festival 2019.

The Annecy Festival reveals the first portion of the Official Selection in competition for the 2019 edition. This year it stands out due to the superior quality of the short films received, but, the average extended length of these shorts has resulted in many quality works being forced to one side, due to a lack of time available to screen them.

Marcel Jean, Artistic Director, Films & Programming, Laurent Million, Yves Nougarède and Sébastien Sperer, as well as Peggy Zejgman-Lecarme, Director of the Cinémathèque de Grenoble, chose 80 shorts. Amongst these 40% were directed or co-directed by women, the second highest proportion in the history of the Festival! Geographically speaking 15 shorts are from Asia, which is a record figure for this region.

Marcel Jean outlines the short films selection that will compete at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2019:

> 40 Short Films
"Here Annecy Cristal Award winners rub shoulders with award winning filmmakers who were students, regular competitors, and unique discoveries that we can’t wait to show you.
If the state of the world is once again discernable within the selection, over all it is far less severe than we have seen in previous years, and some of these films will bring a smile to your lips.
"

> 8 Off-Limits
"The Off-Limits Animation category has the same finding, where some great names in experimental film (Pierre Hébert, Thorsten Fleisch, Thomas Renoldner, and Max Hattler) rub shoulders with new revelations such as Raphaële Bezin from France and the German, Felix Dierich."

> 23 Perspectives
"The 2019 selection is distinguished by the presence of several films describing personal and intimate experiences: Andrea Martignoni reveals a portrait about his recently deceased mother; Jordan Wong films the patterns on his mother’s clothes; Benjamin Hall co-directs a short film with his son Robin, aged 6; and lastly JoAnne Salmon presents a dramatic and touching self-portrait."

> 9 Young Audiences
"This year the selection process has allowed us to discover that filmmakers were mostly preoccupied with the question of how to deal with fear. We have developed a programme that is a kind of progression, the first films address preschool, and the last films address pre-adolescents."
